Study of transporters involved in multidrug resistance in Candida yeasts

Candida species cause serious life-threatening infections. The number of clinically useful antifungals is limited, and treatment is complicated by the emergence of drug resistance caused by membrane transporters that actively export antifungal drugs from cells, resulting in reduced intracellular drug concentrations that are insufficient to kill the cells. The student will use a combination of biophysical (fluorescence spectroscopy) and microbiological methods to study membrane transporters.
