Phenotyping of Energy Metabolism
Content of this page
About the department
The service department provides measurements of physiological parameters of laboratory animals, with particular emphasis on measuring whole-body energy metabolism and muscle parameters. We offer the preparation and execution of studies using the instruments listed below. An approved experimental project is required for experiments. We provide services primarily to research groups at the IPHYS and other academic institutions. Planned analyses, including experimental design, must be consulted in advance with laboratory staff. We also provide training in the handling of laboratory animals for IPHYS employees. The laboratory is located in the G IPHYS building.
Devices and equipment
In vivo methods:
1. Indirect calorimetry complex (Phenomaster, TSE):
a) Indirect calorimetry (mouse, rat)
b) Treadmills for forced physical activity in indirect calorimetry (mouse)
c) Running wheels for voluntary physical activity in indirect calorimetry (mouse)
d) Boxes for programmable food intake restriction in indirect calorimetry (mouse)
e) Telemetric chips for measuring body temperature in indirect calorimetry (mouse)
3. Thermal camera (FLIR T540) for measuring the surface temperature of animals (mouse, rat)
4. Metabolic cages (Ugo Basile) for urine and feces collection (mouse)
Operating and dissection room:
- Isoflurane anesthesia (RWD)
- Dissection stereomicroscope (Olympus)
The devices may only be used in the Phenotyping Unit premises and are operated by technicians or, in exceptional cases, by trained users.
