Press release: Alzheimer’s disease can disturb social behaviour before memory problems become apparent

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and gradually removes a person’s memory, judgement and self-sufficiency. One of the key areas of the brain affected by the disease is the hippocampus – a brain structure important for various forms of memory and learning, including social memory. But new research by scientists at the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences shows that changes in the brain and in behaviour can occur long before the known cognitive disorders become apparent.
