The journal Physiological Research, published by the Institute of Physiology CAS, has achieved notable success in this year’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR). Its impact factor (IF) rose from 2.0 to 2.8, representing a year-on-year increase of 40%, and the journal advanced to the second quartile (Q2) in the Physiology category. In the field ranking, it moved up 18 places. The five-year impact factor also improved, from 2.3 to 2.9.
About the journal
Physiological Research is an English-language scholarly bimonthly published since 1991. Its tradition, however, dates back to 1952, when it was founded as Physiologia Bohemoslovaca. It publishes original research papers, review articles, and short communications in the fields of normal and pathological physiology, biochemistry, biophysics, pharmacology, and immunology. “The exceptionally high citation rate of articles from the institute’s supplement published on the 70th anniversary of the founding of IPHYS in 2024 certainly contributed to this unique rise in the ranking,” emphasizes the journal’s long-serving Editor-in-Chief, MUDr. Josef Zicha, DrSc.

Strengthening the journal’s position increases the visibility of IPHYS’s research at the national and, above all, international levels. The editorial board thanks all authors, reviewers, and editorial board members whose work and collaboration contributed to this result, and trusts that the journal’s standing will continue to rise in the years to come.

What do the impact factor and quartile mean
The impact factor expresses the average number of citations received by articles published in a given journal over the previous two years. The quartile ranking (Q1–Q4) then reflects the journal’s position within its field — advancement to Q2 means that Physiological Research ranks among the top half of journals in the physiology category. The achieved increase thus confirms the growing citation response and influence of the published works.
